Some reasons why the UKT is the UKT |
1) Hit the countries - To be perfectly honest the spark that got me to come up with the idea of doing the UKT was that it was the the cheapest way to bump up my countries been to list, and the UKT has lots of countries. The UKT has four British colonies, two French departments, an affiliated state of the Netherlands, and two protectorates of the U.S.; which overall make it 20 different political zones with four languages not including the Creoles and native languages. That's more countries and territories than all of North America and Central America combined! So go knock that been to countries list up before the whole world is one country and its too late, LOL. |
2) Exercise - It is very important to be physically fit. If I don't have a healthy body I can't truly be happy because I don't feel good physically, and it goes without saying that I can always be healthier. Like most of us I get into workaholic rhythms where I neglect my body for so long that I get out of shape and start to look and feel bad. Sometimes I go to the gym and try to maintain but I never get back to the days when I was in high school and was thin and felt great physically. I have muscle pains, and toxicity in myself. With the UKT I know I will get into the shape of my life and will have a fighting chance of postponing, possibly even indefinitely, that setting in of muscle melting rigamortus jointed old geezer effect that eventually kills us dead.
There have been many times when I was bike touring where I was so fit and felt so good physically that I think I was the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. Just the feeling of being alive sweating under the sun and feeling my body working away like the jewel of the Universe that it is, made me feel like everything was going so perfectly that I could do anything I set my mind to, and with all of that extra time to contemplate I could come up with so many cool ideas. The UKT is better than bike touring though. With bike touring you just exercise your legs, but with the UKT you exercise your whole body when you include the mountain climbing. I have always wanted to be buff like Arnold, and this will be my chance to get a washboard stomach you could break two by fours on and arms that could lift trucks.
Apart from the huge benefits the UKT will have on reasonably healthy guys like Tony and I, the people who are really going to benefit from this wonderful trip are the normal button pushing desk jockeys who have very real problems with their health that is brought on by their chronic lack of exercise and sunshine.
There is a fitness problem in the world today which needs to be solved. And of the many ways to whip fat people into physical shape the UKT is by far the best. I'm sorry to have to admit this, but fat people are sick, and sick people need to be cured. The cure is the UKT.
|
3) Adventure - The UKT will be an adventure of epic proportions. It will be like going back to a time when the Earth was pure and free from pirates, dangerous tribes or harsh weather conditions. It will be just smooth sailing (assuming we remember to keep an eye on the weather reports that is). Every place we land will be distinct from the previous. We will experience the best of the sea, sand, beaches, sea life, bird life, and cosmopolitan human life due to the far flung origins of the inhabitants of the Caribbean.
There will be flat water in the Bahamas, and there will be rough seas in deep water. There will be tiny uninhabited islands and huge mountainous ones.
You name it, the UKT has it. I bet the UKT even has deserts in some spots. The only thing the UKT doesn't have is the cold, and I can deal without that.
The UKT is a huge trip that is done by UKT er in the purest spirit of adventure. There are no guides, there don't even have to be hotels. It's just you and mother Earth, and that will fill you with dreams of more hard core adventures in other lands.
But no adventure better than the UKT.
You name it, the UKT has it; and that's the spirit of adventure. |
4) Education - The best way to educate yourself is to educate yourself. I have both a high school and a college degree, and from experience most of today's formal education is just about going to a big room and struggling to stay awake while some old person blathers on about some boring subject that the school decided I needed to take to get the degree I had to choose from a narrow range of subjects.
The best way to educate yourself is by listening to audio on a subject that you chose. The only problem is that you need time. People like me who work by themselves have plenty of time to educate themselves through audio in our jobs. I can just listen while I wash windows, but a lot of people have to deal with people and other responsibilities thoughout the day and need a retreat like the UKT to have the time to continue their higher education.
One of the most exciting facets of the UKT for me is that I will have the opportunity to educate myself through audio all day long with no interuptions. My favorite way to partake in such activity is by listening to Coast to Coast AM, and when I come to an interesting subject I listen to it over and over again until I memorize all the data and can explain the subject to others. Some other programs that have interesting interviews are Red Ice Radio, Laura Lee, Mike Hagan and various Buddhist discourses. There are other subjects I would like to collect as well, like lessons on economics.
Another point to consider when mixing self education with a trip like the UKT is that when we are way out in the middle of nowhere we can concentrate more on what is being said, as there is less electromagnetic interference from the radio waves that are created by the brains of all the people around us.
It is my prediction that in a few short years, higher education will consist of voyages into nature with the aid of gigabites and gigabites of self chosen material, as the formal college scenario will transform into merely a forum for the sharing of ideas by the students, as the profesors will be downgraded to mere guides.

5) Mysticism - Mysticism is an ambiguous word, but according to the definition as explained by Madonna Cicone, Mysticism is the emotional commune with nature. According to that definition, a profound mystical experience with the Earth could very well be just the thing we need to turn around the destruction we are dealing the environment.
Technology is great but it has some negative side effects. It distracts us and shuts us off from the connection we have had with the Earth for millions of years. Our separation from nature causes us to make consumeristic decisions that have negative effects on the environment, such as driving instead of riding our bikes, forgetting to garden, not exercising enough, spending money on indoor activities like watching TV and playing video games instead of going outside and learning about nature, etc, etc.
It goes without saying that the more time we spend in nature the more time we will spend finding ways to protect nature. When we get too emersed into cyber fantasy world, we become like fish out of water which causes us to conveniently forget the destruction we have on the environment and eventually develop a negative outlook on existence as a whole. Don't get me wrong, video games and movies and TV are cool, but we have to keep a balance here.
We need to get back in touch with the Earth, so what is the best way to go about doing such a thing? There are many trivial ways such as taking more natural medicines, eating more natural and healthier food, going hiking more often, joining environmental causes, but none of these techniques completely take you back to your cave man roots in such a way that you actually feel at one with nature to the point that it permanently changes you. After short weekend trips we fall back into the grind and go back to driving our cars when we really should be riding our bikes, buying over packaged foods when we should just be getting raw fruits and vegetables and cooking them ourselves, and the list goes on. How can we break free from this comfort civilization addiction that we all, including me, suffer from. Well, the answer is the UKT. I say an effective detoxification, or revitalization, takes at least six months and entails large amounts of time spent far from civilization or even other people. Think of it as a type of sensory deprivation in order to make room for another type of sensory sensitization, mystical sensory sensitization.
Every man, woman and child deserves a six month journey back into the their roots if they really want to, and the beautiful thing is with the invention of the UKT they can. We are so separated from nature that it takes a long time to get back into the groove. The journey back to mystical world is a process that involves the body and the mind. In terms of the body when it gets fit it feels healthy and can communicate with the surroundings better, and you get to the point where you and your kayak are as one, so you become an aquatic creature. Imagine the water splashing up and releasing ions from the water which you breath and it heals you, or at least, energizes you, in new and profound ways. When we perform repeated movements for hours on end we go into a trance and enter a quiet and peaceful world with no distractions which clears out all the buried negative thoughts and opens the mind to the creative dreams of the future and also the past, the distant past. The undulations of the waves open our awareness to the world of waves which are the means of the movement of everything. Once we are at one with the boat we become one with the waves and once we are one with the waves, even the large white capped ones are welcomed with a sense of macho excitement that catapult us back to the world of pre technology and remind us that we are in fact still a strong and most noble of animal capable of anything. When we are down on the surface of the water we feel the wind push the water in our faces and the hair atop our head. we will see countless fish, and may even see some Orcas, Dolphins, and Whales swim up to great us. Who knows, maybe we will be in such a mystical trance that we will make eye contact with these magnificent creatures and exchange a telepathic conversation. We will feel the wind blow away the glistening sweat from our arms and even hear and feel the wind push against the boat and off the wave tops. By the time we arrive at the next island although we will be tired and ready to stop, we will be at one with the water, wind, waves, fish, sunshine, and most mystical of all, our own bodies and minds.
The mystical experience doesn't end with the kayaking though. The islands we will visit offer a whole different and complete spectrum of commune with mother nature. Many of the islands we will visit will be uninhabited and unpolluted, and we will be so entranced by it all that we will be able to trick ourselves into thinking we are living back in the age of innocence before all of the craziness of today. We will go back to a place where time and worry do not exist, just like the good old days of the wandering aboriginal dreamland. We will walk barefoot over the white sandy beaches and notice new kinds of shells, grasses, and washed up sea life. The Stars, Planets, and Moon will shine brighter than ever before, and we will memorize their placements just as we did in the past, but contemplate their existence like never before.
One more thing. We will be passing over ancient Atlantis, and I bet you we will have visions of Atlantis and may even bring ancient aliens down upon us, who will in turn show us where the ruins are to be found. You never know what kind of power can be had until you open that part of your mind from the magic of the UKT.
|
6) Inspiration - The first reasons I had for the UKT were for the travel and exercise aspects of it, but the more I have thought about it the more I realize how magnificent the UKT actually is, and I feel honored and proud to be the person to discover and pioneer the Ultimate Kayak Trip, which is probably not just the UKT but the UT, the Ultimate Trip. So I seek to pave the way for a legacy that will enrich the lives of many to come.
I think that once Tony and I do the UKT and get another group to do it the following year with the donation of our gear, a spark will ignite that will motivate at least one group of UKT ers each year, and after five years about five groups per year will be doing the UKT. My reasoning for this is that once a couple of normal guys like us demonstrate that the UKT is actually fun and not difficult in the slightest, the people will come. |
7) Party - I love to party. I heard a bike racer say the best thing about their sport is the glass of water at the end of the race. Well, we'll have plenty of water to drink while were paddling, but a couple glasses of a Pina Colada would sure taste good after a long day of paddling; and because of our social nature we will be more than happy to brag about our travels to the locals; hopefully giving them some ideas.
You see all of the islands will be a festive environment propagated by the friendly demeanor of the laid back island Rasta's and the blissful party atmosphere created by the tourists and the cruise ship cruisers. It will be like one big party divided by excruciatingly painful yet ecstatically pleasant power paddles between the islands. |
8) Rejuvenation - The UKT will rejuvenate us better than any other trip. Imagine being totally burnt out on life because your in a boring routine that has got you in a rut, and then imagine yourself more fit that Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV. You will not let yourself go again. I guarantee it. |
9) Maximum to Maximum - The best way to bring yourself back to life as they say, is to mack it as they say. Keep the schedule full and push your muscles to the maximum, when you reach the beach, sleep to the maximum. You will surely drink water and eat seafood to the maximum, and I bet you you'll party to the max too. When you swing that pendulum back and forth from the maximum extreme ends you will feel the luscious juices of life enter every cell of your body and you will come alive like a shining light bulb of joy, thusly washing away any impurity in your life and replacing it with pure ecstasy. After all, suffering induces joy, sleep induces energy, and expending energy induces sleep. Go maximize to maximum. Maximum extreme! |
10) Because we can - If you don't understand the magnificence of the UKT by now, just know that even though we've never been in a kayak we know that this trip is possible for us.
This reason is for all the skeptics out there who can't understand that all the reasons put together make a good reason for a wide range of people to do the UKT. Just understand that if it's possible it's going to happen. That's what being human is all about. |
| In order to pump up UKT to its maximum I'm going to explain how the UKT is for every kind of person: The obese, the old, the young, couples, the poor, the rich, the doomsayers, and the optimists, the lazy's, the workaholics, and especially the suicidal. So read it and weep with joy. |
The UKT is perfect for the obese because it will whip them into shape faster than anything, and it doesn't have to be unpleasant. An obese person surely can't kayak 50 miles across the ocean my themselves, but they could if they enlisted the help of a fit loving friend or family member. The obese person could initially burn off fat merely by struggling around the boat in and out of the hammock and cockpit, but they would eventually begin paddling, and with time they will paddle enough to begin to shed some serious pounds.
The adventures off the boat will also be beneficial to the obese. They will have to lug their gear on and off the boat and set it all up. They will be exhausted from the effort but a beautiful secluded beach is the perfect place to rest, and later, do Yoga.
A lot of obesity comes from stress and worry, and on a secluded beach there is none of that. It is so quiet on a secluded beach that the obese are transported to a place where they realize it is all up to them to change, there will be nothing to distract them from the task at hand.
|
| The UKT is a good trip for the elderly because old people really know how to relax, and the UKT could conceivably be quite relaxing as long as the aches and pains don't get in the way. The exercise is long and low intensity, just like the elderly prefer. The first half of the UKT is on flat quiet sea with just the relaxing sounds of nature to sooth your soul. And once you get to the big deep water crossings, you'll be ready old one, you'll be ready. |
|
The UKT is perfect for the youth because it is the ultimate adventure, and adventure is what young people seek and benefit from more than anything. A huge trip like the UKT can transform a young person into something they can't even imagine until they experience the magnificence of the UKT. All sorts of magical dreams and sensations will enter the emotions and mind of a young person who is experiencing an ecstatic sensory maximization from all the sights, sounds, and smells that are entirely new to the young person.
The youth would probably be most likely to do the UKT because of all their unbridled enthusiasm and exuberant motivation. Not only will they do it with zeal, but grace, as the young nimble, strong, and durable bodies will easily paddle through the the waves and climb up the mountains. |
I can't think of a more romantic adventure to go on than to do the UKT with some super hot girl, and even if she wasn't fit at the beginning of the trip, any girl would be a goddess incarnate within a few short weeks due to all the exercise. It doesn't take too much imagination to picture the perfect scenery of the islands with naked hottie standing in the way of it all.
If you're not too sure about marrying somebody, I guarantee you will have a pretty good idea about the person with whom you are doing the UKT due to all the synchronistic cooperation that has to go on.
It is also a great way for both the man and the woman to get a good workout seeing that men are generally stronger than women, it would be in a way that is not degrading in any way to the woman; when two people are paddling in one boat, you really have to be paying attention to tell who is doing more work.
It is also the perfect opportunity for both sexes to express that side of themselves which nurtures the other. The man could feel macho by feeling like he is doing most of the paddling, and the woman will have plenty opportunity to cook for the man as he goes out fishing, just like the cave man days! If that sounds a little sexist to you, perhaps this scenario would be more appealing: At the landing of each days paddling on a beautiful secluded beach the two of you give each other sensual but highly physical and rejuvenating oil massages under the sun on the beach. Oh yeah!!! Sometimes when I think about that I wish I wasn't even doing this trip with Tony, but rather some hot Ukrainian girl.
|
| I consider the UKT to be more a great herald of the promise land for the poor similar the preaching's of Jesus Christ himself, but Jesus survives only in words, and the UKT exists in the here and now.
When I say poor I mean poor by Americans standards, I am not talking about third world poor. A poverty stricken person from the third world will not have the means to do the UKT, but if the world increases in wealth, and according to my current projections it will, it won't be long until even the third worlder's will be able to afford the UKT.
I'm not exactly sure how much the UKT will cost, but I know one thing, it will be affordable to the common man. You'll see. I will break it all down upon the end of the journey. I'm thinking five grand, and any Mcdonalds working kid could afford that as long as they live with their parents and don't blow too much of their money away. |
| The UKT can also be highly beneficial to the rich. Due to the lax lives a lot of rich people live, they have separated themselves from nature in a lot of cases more than the average person. It is also good for the rich to see how people can be happy on very little money, and Caribbean people live off the land just as much as anybody with the fishing and banana eating and all. |
The UKT is perfect for all sorts of doomsayers who believe the world is going to hell in a hand basket for whatever reason. Take climate change for example. There is a large number of folks, including myself, who can see that the ocean levels are rising and will continue to rise. When the citizens of the world pay attention to the increments of the oceans rise on an experiential level, we will have a deeper understanding as to exactly what is going on, why it is going on, and what will go on in the future, thusly garnering us the required depth of knowledge to make the right decisions to keep the world healthy. If the volcanoes increase in activity, there is no better place on earth to monitor such activity than the Eastern Antilles, and every UKT er will experience at least a couple active volcano hikes.
Another thing that appears to be changing rapidly is the wind, and nobody would be more able to document changing wind currents that a UKT er due to the fact that it can get pretty windy out there. How about if there was a pole shift, a UKT er could describe those changing water currents to a T don't you think.
Due to the fact that we will set a precedent of thorough reporting on the initial UKT, I'm pretty sure the UKT ers who will follow in our footsteps will also do a good job of reporting the Earth changes to their fans on the land.
Also, If you happen to have the philosophy that the human race is going extinct in our lifetime, I would surmise that you must also believe that it would be in our best interests to experience the magic of our planets natural wonders to the fullest while we still have them.
|
Out of all the people who could benefit from the UKT, the group to stand the most to gain are the people like me who believe the world is in fact going in the right direction, and that we are on the brink of a new humanity that is destined to reap the fruits of billions of years of blood, sweat and tears in an explosive orgasm of beauty untold and heretofore, even unimagined by just about all the worlds citizens.
If you don't believe the human race is destined to become small bodied large headed cyborgs who just sit in chairs all day punching away on keyboards in the sole function of growing the cancerous machine of society, but rather believe we are becoming a new race of super strong Conan-like healthy individuals who merely use our technology to safely give us the mystical experiences of nature that our Neanderthal relatives only dreamed of, then I would have to say that I agree with you. It would be is as if we have died and gone to heaven.
Long jaunts of paddling across the sea may seem dangerous to some now, but in the future with the by then entirely affordably priced Satellite phones, GPS watches and highly networked sea culture, we will surely be totally safe while at sea, to the point that even the feeble bodies will be able to whistle dixie as they paddle on down the waves in a blissful world where they truly believe they are strong again.
|
| Due to a variety of reasons there are too many lazy people in the world who for whatever reason just can't pull themselves together enough to actually get out there and do what they know needs to be done in order to live fulfilled lives. What these people need is something to kick start them in the right direction, put themselves in a situation where they, number one, are forced to work hard to achieve their goals, and number two, are in a natural environment that can both erase their distractions and in turn fill them with a beautiful new sense of purpose in the most beautiful environment imaginable. |
Along with the Optimists, the workaholics stand to benefit from the UKT the most, because this is a group who lives to achieve, and so they will easily complete the UKT with the least amount of discomfort. That is not the only reason though. Workaholics are addicted to their work to the point that their work controls them, and when something is controlling you, you don't have the self control to do things that you know are healthy. The perfect example in how workaholics suffer from their addiction to work is their neglect of their bodies by never having time to go to the gym because they always feel like they are behind schedule. This idea of always feeling like you are behind schedule and neglecting your body because of it is a sickness that needs to be addressed in our intense day in age.
There are a lot of adverse effects of not taking care of your body. You could be the most successful person in the world and improve the lives of millions of people because of your ceaseless toil for your passion, but if you don't feel good physically, it is really hard to be truly happy. Unhealthy bodies can produce chronic pain, make you physically ugly, and lead to sicknesses that due to the amount of money and time you need to tend to these sicknesses, they end up harming your career more than if you were to just take the necessary time out to maintain your body.
A workaholic may think that seven months is too long to take off work, but in my opinion it would take at least that much time to get an unhealthy body back into shape, and a habitually neurotic mind to become grounded enough in such a way that it could maintain an equilibrium after the arrival back home. Your will arrive home in such good health that it will only seem natural for you to maintain that health. After all you will know how much work it will have taken to gain such fitness, so it would be silly to just let your body melt again. However it must be said that even if an out of shape person gets in really good shape, they never really loose it.
I myself belong to the workaholic group and so I know on a personal level exactly how my neurotic behavior keeps me from exercising. I really haven't gotten nearly as much exercise as I need to be truly happy. I feel back pains, neck pains, and muscle pains from sitting in the same position for too long, and pain from my atrophying muscles. I have watched as my handsome physical form deteriorates with the combination of age and lack of exercise over the years, and for what? So I can be a couple years ahead on my various pet projects. I need to ask myself if it is really worth it to get ahead on projects if it means my body hurts and dies that much quicker. I would rather live a well rounded life full of joy because of splendid physical health, than just race to the grave like its some sort of competition.
A person who lives to 100 and contributes X amount to society indisputably lives a better live that someone who only lives to 75 and technically accomplishes the same amount. I believe if we really thought about that concept we would all chose to live to a hundred in style rather than live to 75 under physical pain and sickness. Also, the healthier we are, the healthier we make the world around us, so it should go without saying that the "quality before quantity" motto is the superior path.
The UKT is the perfect tool to get us to exercise the required self control to live a balanced life. In the seven months it takes to do the UKT, the practitioner will have experienced enough self imposed tasks and slavery to another kind of bump and grind, that by the time they return home they will have the strength of discipline to pull themselves away from that computer and get themselves a workout.
Someone might say that it is impossible for workaholics to take that much time off from their respective jobs and maintain their material quality of life, and my answer to these people is that I don't think they are accurately looking into the future of civilization. We are seeing the citizens of the world becoming more educated and thusly more able to create their own jobs as the archaically behemoth bureaucratic
systems of old are giving way to ever multi layered self sufficient outsourcing contractors who can pump out the same product ever more efficiently, and freely. In the future instead of say, an engineer for a multinational company being a slave to their company, they will become a steward to the project they are working on at that particular moment in time, and when that project is over, they will be free until they chose to take on another project. My point is in the future people will have the freedom and wisdom to chose the vacation over the project every once in a while. Sure the money will stop coming, but so will the expenses. If you have house payments you could just rent your house. If you have children to take care of, why, you could take the little tykes with you on the UKT.

The last group of people is a group that causes a great deal of confusion and sadness in our society today. Why do people choose to stop living in this beautiful world? I believe most people who are suicidal are that way because they feel there is no beauty in the world and they are hopeless and helpless. Well like I said, what's more beautiful and free than the UKT? Other people are suicidal due to an untreated imbalance in the brain that causes them to be so listless that they can't even bring themselves to get out of bed. If these people were camped on a beach, I guarantee the hot sun would make them get up.
Whatever the reasons are it should go without saying that it is our responsibility to do our utmost to figure out a way to help these suicidal types accomplish their goals in life, even if their goal really is to kill themselves. It is on this note that I make a solemn proposal to the inconsolably depressed, and that is that even in death you can still make a difference in our world. My proposal is that you at least attempt to do the UKT, and if it doesn't bring you a new sense of purpose in life or a newfound appreciation of all the beauty that our mother Earth has to offer, and you really want to die, you could just sit around and wait until the next hurricane comes, strap a satellite linked video camera to your helmet and fearlessly and honorably head out into the bowls of your creator and get a first hand account of what a hurricane looks like from ground zero. You could in fact bring joy to countless people for years to come from your first hand footage of the fascinating ravages of a storm. Who knows, because kayaks don't sink, you just may survive to tell the tale and decide life actually has enough spice in it to keep you interested until the bitter end.
